Production Manager

Job Overview
A production manager supervises the largest single group of employees in the company and interacts regularly with management, sales people and customer service representatives. A production manager should, therefore, have excellent people management skills, as well as an understanding of the principles and problems of manufacturing the printed product to meet the required demands of the customer in a timely manner.
To manage quality systems and resource materials dedicated toward problem prevention and zero defect reduction. Oversees the quality control team or personally inspects and samples all production in various stages of work. This position has the authority to stop production on any job not being produced according to specifications.

He/she needs:
• to know the methods of collecting data from production areas
• how to develop scheduling
• how to control inventory
• to have a wide range of problem solving techniques

Knowledge of Printing and Mailing
Knows all printing processes and materials and is familiar with the equipment owned by the company.

Knowledge of Systems Related to Manufacturing
• Oversees the operation of all phases of the Production department
• Responsible for advising and making recommendations to Owner/President with respect to the best interests of the company whenever production activities are involved
• Solves technical problems relating to operation of equipment or work
• Knowledge of New Technologies of Computer-to-Plate
• Understands computer integrated manufacturing concepts
Planning and Scheduling
• Responsible for planning and scheduling personnel and equipment effectively and efficiently to reduce bottlenecks and problems
• Understands the layout of the plant and the number of employees that can work the project
• Determines hourly rates, know material costs and understand spoilage
• Schedules overtime as needed on cost-effective basis
• Plans to avoid delays, lessening backlogs
• Be able to forecast work, long-term and short-term
• Supervises production employees and issues job orders to production employees according to production schedules
• Delegates specific duties to key personnel
• Responsible for seeing that all jobs meet schedule; and if not, gives
Sales Reps and CSRs maximum notification of change in schedule

General Responsibilities
• Supervisory and management skills are a must. Ability to plan, organize, direct, control and lead.
• Reviews department and corporate goals with immediately superior and also subordinates, at least yearly.
• Develop and maintain Standard Operating Practices
• Work with vendors on quality related issues
• Perform plant audits of SOP's

Knowledge of Standards
• Determines quality standards and specifications reviews and updates specifications and standards at least yearly.
• Keeps up-to-date on quality trends and techniques through seminars and reading.

Production Responsibilities
• Understands the production workflow
• Establishes priority of work for material inspection(Works with scheduling and production to establish priorities of work for material inspection)
• Checks, analyzes daily quality control reports of the previous nightÆs work and activity reports of quality control inspectors.
• Checks all color OK sheets, advance copy trim sheets, and OKs advance copies for the bindery.
• Determines, according to Bindery needs, priority of inspection of advance copy material.
• Spot checks work being produced in the pressroom and bindery.
• Trims and inspects signatures for pagination, bleeds, trimming, folds, etc., immediately as a new job begins on press.
• Supervises inspection of shipment of customer samples produced by the machine and hand binderies
• Maintains files on all jobs run in pressroom, including press color OKs, advance copies, signatures, some advance copies of bindery, as well as copy OKed sent to customer.,
• Follows through on jobs in plant which may need special handling and which have special standards and specifications.
• Analyzes press problems, stock problems, inks and chemicals, etc., to assist personnel in reaching prescribed quality standards.
• Notifies immediate supervisor in the event of serious problem affecting quality or production

Customer Responsibilities
• May answer customer complaints.
• Evaluates transparencies and art work and works with customers, engravers and color systems operators to produce satisfactory copy, proofs and progressive color proofs.
(This is frequently the responsibility of the Pre-press department)
Good Interpersonal Skills
• Responsible for hiring and dismissal of production employees and initiation of disciplinary measures
• Negotiates with production employees over grievances and reports unsettled grievances to owner
• Trains production employees or upgrade present production employees

Problem Solving Skills
• Keeps careful records of employees, accident reports and efficiency records, pay rates, minor requirements
• Knows state and federal wage laws, environmental laws

Inventory Control
• Should be able to develop inventory levels to meet just-in-time production requirements
• Should have the forms for keeping records, i.e., purchase requisition, purchase orders, trucker copy, shipping order, receiving order, invoice

Implement, Measure Results of Production, Feedback and Problem Solving
• Have procedures for new jobs
• Have tools for scheduling manufacturing standards
• Be able to adjust for variables and avoid causing backlogs
• Know the "do's " and "don'ts" of scheduling
• Know how to measure results of production
• Know how to use statistics to reduce waste and spoilage
• Use of employee involvement in teams, recognition and rewards
